Using advanced microsurgical techniques, the procedure is tailored to your unique situation, with the goal of achieving the best possible outcome. Whether years or decades have passed since your vasectomy, a reversal can offer a second chance to expand your family.
A vasectomy reversal utilizes one or both of the the following microsurgical techniques. The decision to perform a VV or a VE is made at the time of the vasectomy reversal and is determined based on the the fluid characteristics and presence of sperm the the old vasectomy site is opened.
Vasovasostomy (VV)
This is the most common vasectomy reversal procedure. In a vasovasostomy, the surgeon reconnects the two ends of the vas deferens that were cut during the original vasectomy. This creates a direct pathway for sperm to travel from the testicles to the semen. A vasovasostomy is typically performed when sperm is present in the fluid within the vas deferens near the site of the vasectomy.
Vasoepididymostomy (VE)
This is one of the most complex surgical procedures performed by microsurgical surgeons. In up to 30% of men, a blockage has formed closer to the testicle in the epididymis (the coiled tube where sperm matures and is stored) meaning that the chances of success for a vas-to-vas connection will be very unlikely to result in sperm in the ejaculate. In these situations, the vas deferens is anastomosed (sewn together) to one of the tubes in the epididymis. This technique is more likely necessary if the vasectomy was performed many years ago or if other factors are affecting the reproductive tract. Dr. White is the only surgeon in Southern Alberta with training in performing this procedure.
